Dr. B. N Suresh has made significant contributions to Engineering Sciences particularly in the area of Aerospace for the design and development of Launch Vehicles. He is actively involved in the development of complex technologies like, a) Space navigation guidance and control (NGC) systems involving both hardware and software, b) Aerospace control actuation systems and, c) Integrated simulation for aerospace systems. He has been providing the dynamic leadership for the development of launch vehicles and contributed significantly for the successful launches of ASLV, PSLV and GSLV. Before taking over as Director he lead a team of 500 engineers in the development of complex technologies particularly in the navigation, guidance, control and simulation of launch vehicles. He is instrumental in establishing full fledged and state-of-the-art actuation and simulation laboratories for the evaluation of these complex systems. His role in defining the activities for advanced technology development and their planning for launch vehicles in general and for on-board avionics in particular is very significant. He has made significant contributions in the following technology areas over the years.
- Control systems development for all launch vehicles
- Establishment of critical facilities needed for the evaluation of subsystems
- Navigation control and Guidance systems for launch vehicles
- Development of electrohydraulic and electromechanical actuation systems
- Development of on-board software for NGC systems
- Development of launch vehicle Avionics
- Review of launch vehicle systems for flight
- Management of R&D activities at Centre level
- Development of advanced launch vehicles
- Development and management aspects of Space Capsule Recover Experiment
- Head of UN Delegation by India for Indian Space Programme
- System engineering activities at National level
- Establishment of two major laboratories for space actuation and simulation at VSSC
