Research

IIST has been encouraging the education with high technology research needed for the space programme. Towards this an R&D Board has been set up with members drawn from prominent educational and research institutions and also major ISRO Centres. In addition a Research Committee has been set up within the Institute to oversee and monitor the progress of research in the Institute. Faculty members of the Institute are encouraged to develop and submit research proposals in their areas of expertise. As on date a number of research programmes have been initiated. In addition a Compendium of research capability of IIST has been prepared and efforts are on to identify possible areas of collaboration with ISRO centres and Units for research.

Doctoral Programme

Major thrust have been given to start a Doctoral programme. As on today three students have registered for the doctoral programme. Rules and regulations for the doctoral programme have been finalized and the guidelines for the same have been prepared. It is also proposed to take Ph.D students in select areas who would assist research programme in the Institute. Post doctoral programme in the niche areas of space science and technology is also being initiated soon.

International Co-operation

International Co-operation: The Institute has initiated action to enter into international co-operation with a number of premier institutions at Europe and USA. An MOU with Ecole Polytechneique, France has already been signed. Under this both students and faculty exchange programme has been worked out. Collaboration with Caltech, USA and Jet Propulsion Laboratories is being pursued and expected to be completed before the end of this year. Similarly mutual faculty exchange programme between IIST and EADS, Astrim is also being pursued.
