Research forms a significant part of the goals envisaged for this premier and unique institute. The main aim is to seamlessly integrate Research and Development with academics and encourage faculty members to carry on research in their respective areas of interest. The Institute is not only planning to create its own infrastructure to develop an excellent research atmosphere but it will also have the opportunity to share the sophisticated research facilities of ISRO Centres. In order to give an impetus to this activity IIST has created a Research Board with eminent members from major ISRO Centres and other premier educational and research institutes of the country. IIST will entirely fund the research projects of the IIST faculty at the same time encouraging active collaboration with other ISRO Centres, Units and laboratories of national importance. Peer Review committees constituted by the Board will critically review the project proposals in order to cater to the high standards set for the institute.

IIST has also plans to initiate the post graduate and doctoral programme soon. The necessary action has been initiated to identify a few specialized areas which are very essential to ISRO and to structure M.Tech programme in those identified areas. Similarly, Doctoral programme has been initiated with the registration of one or two Scientists and Engineers of ISRO who would qualify for the admission to IIST.

IIST also plans to take project associates who would get an opportunity to register for Doctorate subject to fulfilling the stipulated conditions of IIST. For Doctoral programme, candidates with NET/GATE qualification will be preferred. The candidate has to go through a review procedure set by the Doctoral Review committee before he/she can register for PhD programme. The Institute will also support postdoctoral research fellowship in close association with ISRO in highly specialized areas of research, which are relevant to ISRO programmes.

There will be a strong emphasis on publishing the results of the research activities in journals of national and international repute. However, the research policy framework shall be developing by the Board of Management in close association with ISRO. Scientist/Engineers from ISRO and other leading R & D organizations will be invited to participate in the research activities as visiting scientists, visiting professors and adjunct faculty members.
