ISRO/DoS Admissions : IIST

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology envisions the integration of Space Technology and Space Science educational programs with basic and applied research for meeting the national R&D requirements of science and technology in general and of the Indian Space Programme in particular. The institute provides a vibrant research atmosphere and offers doctoral and postdoctoral programmes. Applications are invited from ISRO / DoS employees for admission to the part-time Ph.D. Programme starting in January 2016, in the areas of Aerospace Engineering, Avionics, Earth and Space Sciences, Chemistry, Humanities, Mathematics and Physics. Interested candidates are encouraged to go through the department and faculty profiles for details of research areas pursued at IIST.

Fellowship

Part-time Ph.D. Scholars are not eligible for any Research Fellowship in addition to their applicable emoluments as ISRO/DoS employees

Selection Procedure
  • The IIST Part-time Ph.D. Program is open to Scientists/Engineers, Faculty Members working in any of the Centres/Units of ISRO/DoS including IIST faculty.
  • Prospective candidates will make an application, duly forwarded to IIST by their respective Unit/Centres, giving details of their previous academic record, research experience, and publications, if any, along with a brief summary of the proposed research work.
  • After a preliminary scrutiny, the application shall be reviewed by the IIST Research Committee to evaluate the overall relevance of the proposed research topic and the ability of the Applicant to pursue the programme.
  • The applicant will be invited to present a seminar on the broad area of proposed research before the Research Committee and other Expert Members in the field who will be invited for the Seminar.
  • The selection of the applicant for the Part-time Ph.D. Program of the IIST is based on the recommendation of the Research Committee and the approval of the Director, IIST.
  • Applicants whose selection is approved by the Director, IIST will be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme by duly undergoing the process of Admission and Registration in the respective Academic Departments on the dates specified in the communication to the selected candidates.

Requirements
  • For Part-time Ph.D. Scholars from DoS Centres/Units, in addition to the Internal Ph.D. Supervisor from IIST faculty, an External Supervisor from relevant ISRO Centre shall also be identified.
  • Part-time Research Scholars will have to fulfill a minimum residential requirement of six months at the IIST campus, during which period they will undergo course work identified by the proposed Supervisors in consultation with the HoD.
  • The stay of Part-time Ph.D. Scholars from ISRO/DoS at IIST during their Residential Requirement, and the general conditions of their Ph.D. Programme will be regulated as per the existent rules of ISRO-IIST Educational Programme.

Age Limit

Part-time scholars from the Centres/Units of Department of Space should be below 45 years on the date of their application to IIST.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in the relevant area, and must have secured first class or equivalent throughout their academic career. However, outstanding candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with excellent academic record (above 85% or equivalent throughout their academic career) and aptitude for research may be considered for direct admission to the Ph.D. Programme.

HOW TO APPLY
        • Applications shall be submitted online at the IIST website: admission.iist.ac.in. and duly forwarded to IIST by their respective Unit/Centres
        • The applicants will not be allowed to make any changes in the profile registration once submitted. Hence utmost care should be taken by the applicant while filling the profile.

Note:The applicants who are shortlisted for Ph.D. are required present a seminar on the broad area of proposed research and appear for an interview .List of shortlisted candidates will be intimated to the concerned authorities of DOS/ISRO Units/Centres. Application forms received after the last date will not be considered under any circumstances.The filled in online application form through proper channel may be sent to Deputy Registrar(Academics), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Valiamala PO, Thiruvananthapuram- 695 547 along with the self attested copies of certificates/testimonials on or before May 15, 2017

Applicant should be below 48 years as on April 30, 2017.

Educational Qualification & Eligibility

M.Tech/M.Sc/M.S. or equivalent degree with a minimum of 60% marks or CGPA 6.5 out of 10.
Nationality: Applicant should be an Indian citizen.
