Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology envisions the integration of Space Technology and Space Science educational programs with basic and applied research for meeting the national R&D requirements of science and technology in general and of the Indian Space Programme in particular. The institute provides a vibrant research atmosphere and offers doctoral and postdoctoral programmes.

Applications are invited from highly motivated applicants for admission to the Ph.D. Programme starting in July 2018, in the areas given below.

  2. Avionics
  3. Chemistry
  4. Earth and Space Sciences
  5. Humanities
  6. Mathematics
  7. Physics

Part-time Ph.D. Scholars are not eligible for any Research Fellowship in addition to their applicable emoluments as ISRO/DoS employees

Selection Procedure
  • The IIST Part-time Ph.D. Program is open to Scientists/Engineers, Faculty Members working in any of the Centres/Units of ISRO/DoS including IIST faculty.
  • Prospective candidates will make an application, duly forwarded to IIST by their respective Units/Centres, giving details of their previous academic record, research experience, and publications, if any, along with a brief summary of the proposed research work in consultation with the faculty in the respective areas in IIST whom they intend to choose as guides. The list of faculties and their areas of research is available in IIST website. The duly forwarded applications shall reach the Deputy Registrar (Acadamic)  IIST on or before May 24, 2018.
  • After a preliminary scrutiny, the application shall be reviewed by the IIST Research Committee to evaluate the overall relevance of the proposed research topic and the ability of the Applicant to pursue the programme.
  • All DoS/ISRO Sponsored candidates shall undertake a screening written test in order to qualify for PhD admission interview. The Screening Written test has one part:Part A (40 Marks) with aptitude and mathematics syllabus similar to the syllabus for July 2018 PhD screening test(based on GATE aptitude and mathematics) for regular fulltime students. All DoS/ISRO sponsored PhD candidates will in addition give a presentation and face an interview for the remaining 60 marks.
  • The selection of the applicant for the Part-time Ph.D. Program of the IIST is based on the recommendation of the Research Committee and the approval of the Director, IIST.
  • Applicants whose selection is approved by the Director, IIST will be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme by duly undergoing the process of Admission and Registration in the respective Academic Departments on the dates specified in the communication to the selected candidates.
  • For Part-time Ph.D. Scholars from DoS Centres/Units, in addition to the Internal Ph.D. Supervisor from IIST faculty, an External Supervisor from relevant ISRO Centre shall also be identified.
  • Part-time Research Scholars will have to fulfill a minimum residential requirement of six months at the IIST campus, during which period they will undergo course work identified by the proposed Supervisors in consultation with the HoD.
  • The stay of Part-time Ph.D. Scholars from ISRO/DoS at IIST during their Residential Requirement, and the general conditions of their Ph.D. Programme will be regulated as per the extant rules of ISRO-IIST Educational Programme.
        • Applications shall be submitted online at the IIST website: and duly forwarded to IIST by their respective Unit/Centres
        • The applicants will not be allowed to make any changes in the profile registration once submitted. Hence utmost care should be taken by the applicant while filling the profile.

Note:The applicants who are shortlisted for Ph.D. are required present a seminar on the broad area of proposed research and appear for an interview .List of shortlisted candidates will be intimated to the concerned authorities of DOS/ISRO Units/Centres. Application forms received after the last date will not be considered under any circumstances.

The filled in online application form through proper channel may be sent to Deputy Registrar(Academics), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Valiamala PO, Thiruvananthapuram- 695 547 along with the self attested copies of certificates/testimonials on or before May 24, 2018.

Age Limit: Applicant should be below 48 years as on May 18,2018.

Educational Qualification & Eligibility: M.Tech/M.Sc/Master of Science/master of Humanities or equivalent degree with a minimum of 60% marks or CGPA 6.5 out of 10.

Nationality: Applicant should be an Indian citizen
