Department of Chemistry is established to undertake teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate level where strong foundations are laid facilitating the design and development of novel materials and processes to meet future technological challenges. The department offers Chemistry courses (core as well as electives) for B.Tech Programmes of the institute and a M.Tech. programme in Materials Science and Technology.
Research in the Department of Chemistry is a symbiosis of different branches of science ultimately leading to novel material development, their testing and applications in diverse areas of Materials Science and Technology including materials to cater to the demand of future space programs of the nation. Each faculty member pursues research in one’s own area of interest and guide students for Ph. D degree. Currently, 19 Ph. D scholars are working in the department. Faculty members undertake interdisciplinary research projects funded by IIST and projects in areas of high relevance to space programmes in collaboration with ISRO.
