Research forms a significant part of the goals envisaged for this premier and unique institute. The main aim is to seamlessly integrate research and development with academics and encourage faculty members to carry on research in their respective areas of interest.
Research in IIST is built on the foundations of various academic programmes run by the Departments of Aerospace, Avionics, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space sciences, Mathematics and Humanities. The major theme of our research portfolio is the application of cutting - edge science to generate new technology. The style of research in IIST is both theoretical as well as richly experimental, and the institute is setting up state-of-the-art facilities in all departments to support its research activities. The Institute is focused on strong interdisciplinary and collaborative work both within the various departments and across the various centres of ISRO, which will help to generate excellent technologies responding to the need of local, national and global interest. IIST also explores research collaborations and scientific exchanges with international academic and research organizations. Research collaborations and exchange of faculties as well as students of IIST with Ecole Polytechnic, France have been initiated.
All the departments are involved in projects and research of national and international importance. Research in departments is through IIST funded projects and the regular PhD program. IIST provides ‘in house’ funding. Project proposals submitted by the faculty members are forwarded to various Peer Review Committees [PRCs] of IIST based on the nature and areas of research. These committees constitute internal (from IIST) as well as external members. The submitted proposals are sent to a panel of subject experts for evaluation. The selected proposals are approved by Research Committee [RC] and funded by the Research Board [RB]. All the research activities in IIST are coordinated by the RC which is chaired by the Dean, R&D. All research related decisions at IIST are taken by the RC and finally approved by the RB.
