A space where volunteers grow together, support one another, and find purpose in collective action. This sense of belonging and shared commitment fuels everything we do, embodying IIST’s vision of nurturing not only scientific excellence, but also socially conscious and compassionate individuals.

Activities

Nirmaan conducts engaging sessions in multiple schools, currently active in two institutions and steadily expanding our reach. These sessions aim to introduce students—particularly those from rural or under-resourced communities—to modern science, technology, and life skills.
Beyond academics, we also encourage social awareness and positive decision-making through open, age-appropriate conversations. Our sessions have addressed important topics such as health, well-being, and personal safety, fostering strong values in young minds.

As part of Project THRIVE, initiated by the Directorate of Samoohika Sannadhasena, Kerala Youth Leadership Academy (KYLA), and the Scheduled Tribes (ST) Department of Kerala, Nirmaan volunteers conduct sessions for tribal high school students at Model Residential School, Njaraneeli. These sessions cover a wide range of topics including Mathematics, English, Rocketry, Astronomy, Career Guidance, and more, aiming to expose students to the modern world and broaden their aspirations.

In collaboration with a wider network of student volunteers from various colleges, and after undergoing training in communication and engagement, our volunteers work to inspire and support these students in both academic and personal growth.
Additionally, with support from the relevant government departments, we are publishing an annual magazine showcasing the creativity of these children. The magazine features stories, poems, articles, and artwork in both English and Malayalam, giving students a platform to express themselves and build confidence.

Under the Schools@IIST program, Nirmaan coordinates inspiring campus visits for school students during occasions such as National Space Day, World Space Week, Independence Day, Republic Day, and during technical and cultural fests.

These visits include explorations of IIST’s labs, exhibitions and library, offering students hands-on insights into scientific research and academic life. The initiative aims to spark curiosity and motivate students to pursue careers in science and technology.

Nirmaan organizes cleaning initiatives across beaches, tourist sites, public spaces, and the IIST campus, promoting environmental responsibility and civic engagement. We have collaborated with WWF and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Implementation Committee (SBAIC), IIST, to conduct impactful drives and raise awareness about cleanliness and sustainability.

Nirmaan regularly coordinates blood donation drives, particularly during periods of urgent need. Collaborations with institutions like the Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, ensure that these campaigns directly benefit patients and hospitals in the region.

Nirmaan actively provides support during emergencies, mobilizing resources and volunteers to help communities in need. We also run awareness campaigns addressing key issues such as academic stress, emotional well-being, and substance use, aiming to create a supportive and informed environment through open and inclusive dialogue.

Through our donation campaigns, we collect unused clothes and daily essentials and distribute them to underprivileged communities.

Following the landslides in Ponmudi, Nirmaan volunteers collected and delivered groceries and essential supplies to affected families, demonstrating our readiness to serve in times of crisis.

Nirmaan fosters strong connections among its volunteers through regular bonding and team-building activities. From group games to hikes and informal gatherings, these sessions strengthen the club’s internal support system and reinforce the spirit of collaboration and shared purpose.
