Interactive Talk by Astronaut Sunita Williams
The visit of Captain Sunita Williams to the IIST on January 27, 2026 was far more than an interaction with an astronaut, it was a quiet, profound lesson in life, leadership, and humanity. She was received in the traditional manner by Prof. Dipankar Banerjee, Vice Chancellor, IIST, along with the Prof. Kuruvilla Joseph, Pro Vice-Chancellor, by presenting an Angavastram. The Vice Chancellor formally welcomed her to the IIST campus. She then addressed the IIST community on “Living and Working in Space,” sharing insights from her journey and her life and work aboard the International Space Station. She spoke about the beautiful way systems and relationships come together to make a space mission unfold; about the courage it takes to meet life with the best possible attitude, even as it continues to surprise us. She reminded us of the strength of standing together as a team, gently bridging one another’s blind spots, and of deeply cherishing the people and systems that quietly hold us up and keep us resilient. Her warm and open interaction with students turned curiosity into confidence and dreams into quiet determination. For many young minds at IIST, this afternoon will remain a defining moment, one where dreams and possibilities felt more real and the future brighter. Prof Kuruvilla Joseph, Pro Vice Chancellor, IIST expressed deep gratitude to Captain Sunita Williams for sharing her journey, wisdom, and grace with the IIST community, and to the U.S. Embassy for their invaluable support and coordination in making this memorable visit possible.
