Workshop on Recent Advances of Network Softwarization in Wireless Networks

Wed, 21 Jan 2026

This talk focuses on recent advances in network softwarization for wireless networks and how modern systems such as 5G, Open RAN, and future 6G are shifting from hardware-based solutions to like Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Service Function Chaining (SFC), which help make networks more flexible, scalable, and cost-effective. In this session I also discusses key performance challenges that arise when traditional and cellular network functions are implemented in software using open-source platforms such as OpenNetVM, OpenAirInterface, and srsLTE. These challenges include latency, resource contention, and performance interference. To address these issues, I presents practical and easy-to-understand solutions using DPDK, smart resource allocation, cache and memory management, and NUMA-aware placement. It also highlights the importance of energy efficiency, reliability, and low-latency support for emerging applications such as vehicular networks, IoT, and ultra-reliable communications.
