M. Tech. in Optical Engineering

Optical engineering programme is offered to prepare students for the application of fundamental optics in modern technology and research environments. Optics based applications abound in modern day technology, from space technology to applications in household gadgets such as laptops and PCs, and thus, optical engineering is an essential tool in majority of day to day applications. Moreover, the recent advent of quantum information technology is largely driven by a combination of fundamental optics and optical technology. Optical technology is thus an active ingredient in modern day technology, which is essentially integrated in nature.

With this in the background, the course's main objective is to

  • Train students of diverse backgrounds holistically towards optics based technology.
In fact, students with background in physics, electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science, are all eligible to apply for this course. The course has been designed with the right balance of science and engineering with full emphasis on optics. Advanced concepts like Fourier optics, holography, image processing, guided waves, etc. are complemented by practical courses like laser and optoelectronics, optomechanical design, adaptive optics, etc. The course is supported by one of the most advanced optics training laboratories in the country,
  • To impart practical working knowledge of optics based technology,
where the student learns on certain aspects of optics based technology. Students, as part of the curriculum, during their project phase, work on optics application oriented research problems both experimental and theoretical, so as
  • To train them towards cutting edge applied optics based research.
The emerging area of quantum technology is also covered in the curriculum
    as an elective.

MTech in Optical Engineering Program outcome:

Having completed an MTech in Optical Engineering, the student is equipped to handle diverse optics based applications required in the industry. Students go on to be absorbed in the industry which is oriented towards

  • Optics based Space applications
  • Optics based defence applications
  • Optical technology for communications
  • Optical components manufacturing,
  • Optical device manufacturing,
  • etc. Further, some of the motivated students go on to pursue
  • Optics oriented research and development.
