ASRG Project Review Workshop
The Advanced Space Research Group (ASRG) at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) was set up by the Department of Space in 2020. It is an important link for IIST and ISRO centres to work together on research. A dedicated committee led by Satish Dhawan Professor Shri Premdas M guides ASRG in finding joint research themes, helping with project proposals, and making sure that these projects move forward on time. Most ISRO centres have set up special Link Units to make this collaboration easier. These units suggest new research themes and keep an eye on ongoing work, giving Principal Investigators useful advice. The Empowered Overseeing Committee (EOC) is in charge of the whole framework. It is the highest governing body and is led by IIST Vice Chancellor Prof. Dipankar Banerjee. The EOC is made up of all the Link Unit Chairpersons. It has the power to approve new projects, review ongoing research, and officially approve the end of completed projects.
Currently, ASRG manages a strong portfolio of 32 projects funded by eight ISRO centres: VSSC, LPSC, IISU, SAC, URSC, LEOS, ISTRAC, and HSFC. These joint projects, which have brought in about ₹3.5 crore in research funding for IIST since 2022, look into a wide range of cutting-edge topics, such as combustion instability, cryogenic two-phase flow, thrusters, satellite interference, bio-astronautics, and the use of artificial intelligence. Two of these 32 projects are finished, seven are almost done, and 23 are still going on. On January 29, 2026, at the IIST campus, ASRG held the "ASRG Workshop 2026" to look back on all the progress that had been made, get feedback from researchers, and talk about ways to work together in the future. The group is putting out a full-page souvenir that lists all the important technical details of each project as a main feature of this event.
A strong sense of cooperation between institutions is very important for ASRG's continued success. The group would like to thank the ISRO Chairman, the Directors of the ISRO centres that took part, and the management of IIST from the bottom of their hearts. The faculty, scientists, and engineers from both IIST and ISRO have been very helpful in making this dynamic research project stronger by always being there for it, giving useful advice, and working hard.
