IIST in Space Analog Mission

Space Analog Mission is a simulated space environment designed to study the challenges of human space exploration, particularly for missions to the Moon and Mars. Himalayan Outpost for Planetary Exploration (HOPE) is a specially designed Habitat Module for crew living and a Utility Module for operations and support systems, which are interconnected for seamless workflow. The HOPE station set up by ISRO aims to simulate space-like conditions on Earth to aid research for future interplanetary missions. This initiative aims to prepare for future human spaceflight by researching areas like habitat design, resource management, and the psychological impact of isolation. Dr V. Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space & Chairman, ISRO inaugurated the Himalayan Outpost for Planetary Exploration (HOPE) analog mission setup in Tso Kar Valley, Ladakh in presence of Prof. Dipankar Banerjee (Vice Chancellor, IIST), Shri Dinesh Kumar Singh (Director, HSFC), Prof. Saket Kushwaha (Vice Chancellor, Ladakh University), PI of different institutes, and HSFC Team members.

Dr. Palash Kumar Basu from IIST, one of the Principal Investigators of this project, is conducting research to isolate DNA/RNA from Exhale breath, which can be used for genome sequencing to monitor Cardiovascular, Respiratory, and Neurological parameters for monitoring in situ Astronauts’ health in a real space mission. The data will be validated with a standard Epigenetic / Genetic study using Blood samples with the help of RGCB and KIMS Health, Trivandrum.
