Inaugration IEEE Power and Energy Society Student Branch Chapter at IIST Trivandrum

Fri, 9 Jan 2026

The inauguration of the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Student Branch Chapter at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, marks a significant step toward strengthening academic engagement and research activities in the field of power and energy systems. IEEE PES is a globally recognized professional society dedicated to advancing innovation in electric power systems, renewable energy integration, and sustainable technologies. The establishment of this student chapter provides a dedicated platform for students and researchers to actively participate in technical discussions, collaborative projects, and professional networking. The key objectives include officially establishing the IEEE PES Student Branch Chapter at IIST, promoting student involvement in power and energy engineering, facilitating interaction with experts, and encouraging research in renewable energy, microgrids, and power electronics. The inauguration ceremony was held on January 9th, 2026, at 01:45 PM in the Council Hall, Admin Block, IIST. A distinguished lecture titled 'Inverter Transition Management for AC Microgrids' was conducted earlier at 10:45 AM in Swayamprabha Hall, Avionics Block. The event was graced by Dr. Dipankar Banerjee (Vice-Chancellor, IIST), Dr. Vinod John (Professor, IISc Bengaluru), Dr. Kuruvilla Joseph (Pro Vice-Chancellor, IIST), Dr. Raju K George (Dean), Dr. Manoj B.S (Chair, IEEE Kerala Section), Dr. Boby Philip (Chair, IEEE PES Kerala Chapter), Dr. Selvaganesan (HoD, Avionics), Dr. Rajeevan P.P. (Advisor, IEEE PES SBC IIST), Mr. Naufal N (Chair, IEEE PES SBC IIST), and Ms. Archa A.S (Secretary, IEEE PES SBC IIST). The ceremony included formal addresses, the official launch of the student chapter, and emphasis on sustainable energy research and innovation. Dr. Vinod John delivered a keynote on 'Power Electronics – A Technology Enabler for a Carbon-free Energy Pathway', discussing renewable integration, efficiency, and future trends. The lecture on inverter transition management covered grid-forming and grid-following modes, stability challenges, and control strategies for AC microgrids. The event saw active participation, Q&A sessions, networking, and increased interest in IEEE PES membership. The chapter enhances technical exposure, research opportunities, and professional development for students. The inauguration was successful and impactful, combining formal launch with technical enrichment.
