The 79th Independence Day was celebrated at IIST with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour. The morning was cool and cloudy, but the mood was bright and cheerful. The programme began at 9:00 AM at the ground opposite the Administrative Block, which was adorned with tricolour flags. Prof. Dipankar Banerjee, hoisted the National Flag and delivered the Independence Day speech. Following the flag hoisting, the national anthem echoed across the campus, uniting everyone in a shared feeling of patriotism. In his address, the Vice Chancellor recalled the sacrifices of our great leaders and reminded everyone that, as an academic institute with young minds, IIST has the responsibility to set examples through its actions. He urged that our deeds should inspire future generations, and that history should remember us not only as beneficiaries of freedom, but as its guardians. He also emphasized the importance of freedom, responsibility, and the role of youth in shaping the nation's future. Prof. Banerjee inspected the Guard of Honour presented by the CISF contingent. The CISF put on an impressive display of their skills, demonstrating the use of three key weapons - INSAS rifle, carbine machine gun, and pistol. They showed their expertise in handling, assembling, and disassembling them, even blindfolded and with one hand. The performance ended with a lovely Bhangra dance by the CISF, which was met with loud applause. Prizes were distributed to CISF, winners of Hindi competitions, and winners of competitions held for the children of CISF personnel. Refreshments were served to all present, and the celebrations concluded with cultural programmes at the Multipurpose Hall.
