Visit of Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, Astronaut, to IIST
IIST organised a distinguished lecture by India's first astronaut, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, on 29th October 2025. Prof. Dipankar Banerjee, Vice Chancellor, IIST, delivered the welcome address and introduced the speaker. Dr B.N. Suresh, Hon. Chancellor, IIST, recalled his association with Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma and welcomed the chief guest to IIST. Shri. Rakesh Sharma started his speech by acknowledging the incredible transformation of ISRO, which is now proficient in everything from remote sensing to planetary exploration, and set a future agenda: placing a human in orbit, building the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, and putting an Indian footprint on the Moon by 2040. He made it clear that ISRO—not the private sector—will remain the driving force behind India's cutting-edge exploration for the foreseeable future. He explained how his generation chose careers and sought success in professional life. He asked the students to minutely examine the concept of success and define their version of success before choosing a career. He contrasted the pursuit of professional fulfilment, reputation, and respect with the modern focus on high salaries and financial wealth. He showed a short video that provides a sneak peek at what the future holds for students who pursue the dream of becoming a space professional as part of ISRO. He emphasised ISRO’s unique philosophy of "science with a conscience," focusing on inclusive programs that benefit the common man, such as telemedicine, disaster warnings, and socio-economic development—rather than science for profit. He reminded the students that they have the chance to be the ones monitoring the launch of a rocket with 'Bharat' and 'ISRO' printed on the sides—a pride no office can provide. A lively interactive session followed the lecture. Prof. Kuruvilla Joseph, Pro Vice Chancellor, IIST, recalled Shri Rakesh Sharma's earlier visits to IIST. He proposed the vote of thanks, and the event concluded with the playing of the National Anthem.
