What is the world made up of?
What the world is made up of has been a matter of concern and curiosity to humans from early times. I will set out the modern interpretation of this understanding, called particle physics. In particular, I will try and build the Standard Model of particle physics, which describes particles and their interactions, from basic physics principles, and list a few observations that led to this understanding.
Dr. Indumathi D is the Raja Ramanna Chair Professor at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru. She completed her Master’s degree in Physics from Madras Christian College, Chennai, followed by a PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai. She subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, and the University of Dortmund, Germany.
She joined the Harish Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad, as a faculty member, where she worked on finite-temperature field theory, and nuclear modifications of strong-interaction processes. In 1998, she moved back to the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, where she resumed her research on neutrinos.
Dr. Indumathi was also associated with the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) collaboration, whose primary objective was to establish a neutrino laboratory in India. In addition to her research, she has a strong interest in science popularization and serves as the editor of Jantar Mantar, a bi-monthly science magazine for high-school students.
