Interview with Prof.Dipankar Banerjee, Vice Chancellor, IIST
Prof. Dipankar Banerjee, Vice Chancellor, IIST, provided a deep dive into Aditya-L1 mission, India's dedicated solar observatory positioned at the Lagrange-1 point. Prof. Banerjee explained how the mission is crucial for continuously monitoring the Sun, having already detected many solar flares and studying the early phases of large solar explosions with its powerful instruments like the coronagraph. He emphasized the critical role of the data, which is now open source to the global community, in predicting Space Weather, which is essential for protecting satellites, communication systems, and future human space endeavours from damaging solar storms. The Aditya conducts workshops and other programmes to understand this data and analyse the same. He also mentioned the movement of different observatories working together to have a comprehensive understanding of these phenomena. The interview also touched upon life on other planets, the significance of solar energy, Space Research of IIST, and the joint India-Japan LUPEX mission.
