SkyTrek with IIST is an outreach initiative of the IIST Astronomy Club that brings the wonders of the night sky closer to students and the public through guided, telescope-based skywatch sessions.

The programme offers schools, colleges, and other organisations an opportunity to experience the night sky through telescopic observations and interactive explanations by members of the IIST Astronomy Club. Participants may observe celestial objects such as the Moon, planets, star clusters, nebulae, and other visible astronomical phenomena, depending on the time of the session and observing conditions.

SkyTrek combines hands-on astronomical observation with accessible explanations, helping participants develop an interest in astronomy and a deeper appreciation of the universe around us.

Guidelines for Organising a SkyTrek Session

• Requests should preferably be submitted well in advance to facilitate planning and coordination.
• The programme is intended for schools, colleges, educational institutions, and other organisations with a suitable group of participants.
• The organising institution is encouraged to include students from nearby Government/Government-aided schools, whenever feasible, to extend the benefits of the programme to a wider  and more diverse student community.
• The organising institution should provide a suitable open space with a clear view of the sky and minimal obstruction from buildings, trees, or other structures.
• The observation area should have minimal artificial light to ensure better visibility of celestial objects.
• The organising institution should ensure adequate seating, basic lighting, and necessary arrangements for the safety and orderly movement of participants.
• The programme is best conducted during the evening/night, depending on the visibility of suitable celestial objects.
• The actual objects available for observation will depend on the date, time, season, location, and prevailing sky conditions. Observation of specific objects such as Saturn or particular nebulae cannot be guaranteed.
• Skywatch sessions are subject to favourable weather conditions, the academic schedule, and the availability of IIST Astronomy Club members and equipment. Cloud cover, rain, haze, or poor visibility may require the session to be postponed or cancelled.
